San Pedro: desert hotel
San
Pedro is situated
in the world’s driest desert. San Pedro is an ancient village
and meeting place for travellers crossing the
Atacama desert from Peru and Bolivia to go further south in Chile. Today
San Pedro de Atacama is equally popular among tourists, who either visit
it for its own sake or call in on their way from Machu Pichu in Peru
or the altiplano of Bolivia.
Expeditions
out from San Pedro
From
San Pedro there are wonderful expeditions to be made, to the Atacama
Salt Lake where flamingos can be seen, to the altiplano with the El
Tatio geysers and to the little villages in the desert, some with churches
built by the Spanish conquistadors in the sixteenth century.
San
Pedro: the village
For
the majority of travellers to Chile
the Atacama desert,
with the village and accommodation of San Pedro
de Atacama at its centre, is one of the two prime sites in Chile,
to be seen along with Torres del Paine as the other ‘must’.
Hotel
